project: Haus B
type: Single-family house
location: Klosterneuburg, Lower Austria
A family of six desperately trying to save the old house on the plot – a little but charming ruin. Alarmed not to dwarf and corset the little old house with the new programmatic volume, we decided to split the program into 4 separate ones: the old house, the kids tower, the family room and a central, connecting volume, which houses a supersized table where the family can meet and sit down together.
We delicately arranged the three new volumes to show respect to the old dog, moving them around in such ways that they would carve three completely different outdoor areas between them. We simply love to give different spaces radically different qualities! By opening up the volumes differently and connecting each one of them to a different outdoor area you can experience various spatial qualities, just by exploring the house in a matter of minutes. The living room looks straight into to the vineyards, the kids tower overlooks the valley and a little breakfast terrace says hello to the neighbors in the southeast, giving you a kiss of the sun for your breakfast.
